Everything Solid

Making the exhibition tactile

Client

Louise De Belle and Nicolo Ornaghi

What we did

  • Book design

We were tasked with capturing, in book form, the melancholic spirit of an exhibition of Louis De Belle’s photographs alongside an essay by the curator, Nicolò Ornaghi.

De Belle’s photo series records the deconstruction of a Boby Trolley, Joe Colombo’s  iconic modernist design of the’ 70s. In keeping with the nostalgia around the Boby Trolley, particularly in its use of plastic,  we chose a glossy stock, ultra thick pages and plastic spiral binding. The thickness of individual pages makes reference to the trolley's plastic sides, whilst also suggesting books typically read to toddlers.

We marked the distinction between the artistic subject matter and curator Ornaghi’s contextualising essay by setting the text in red Neue Haas Grotesk, printed on its own distinctive stock.

The result is a book with a tactile quality, physically connected to its subject matter that enables readers to gain a feel for the spirit of the work whilst learning about its context.
